A collection of six plays for young audiences, Prepare to Embark was published in 2003 by Playwrights Canada Press and edited by Emil and playwright Shirley Barrie. After considering dozens of manuscripts that were either submitted or on hand at the Playwrights Guild of Canada, Emil and Shirley chose six diverse works. The plays cover a broad spectrum of themes and styles, and range from the fantastical to the futuristic. The six plays are Drew Hayden Taylor's Girl Who Loved Her Horses; Beo's Bedroom by Ned Dickens; Gail Nyoka's Mella Mella; Arthur Milner's Crusader of the World; The Elfin Knight by Christine Foster; and Matthew Decter's Cyberteens in Love.
From the back cover:
"The six plays featured in this collection offer endless ways to engage students in middle grades. Younger students can delight in the language and landscape of Beo's Bedroom and The Elfin Knight in readings or performances staged by older students. More mature students can explore the challenges faced by the protagonists in Cyberteens in Love and Crusader of the World. Students of all ages can draw lessons from the young girls whose stories shape Mella Mella and Girl Who Loved Her Horses. Step into a play and prepare to embark."
