Works in Progress

Retardo the MagnificentA work for young readers about a boy whose world includes a menacing trio at school, a homeless woman, and a passion for photography.

convictionA commissioned stage play about wrongful convictions, and the impact they have had beyond the innocent individuals who languished for years in prison. Weaving court transcripts and testimony, Emil is working with artistic director Joel Greenberg of Studio 180, whose previous acclaimed productions include The Laramie Project and The Arab-Israeli Cookbook.

Moses Moves InA stage play about a white, middle-class family whose values are turned inside out when Moses, a young African they have been sponsoring for years, shows up at their door.

alphabet sopEmil has been commissioned to write the book and lyrics for this musical about dyslexia, and the strained relationship between a father and son. Picture young Otto as he wrestles with language and is hounded and haunted by silent letters. Songs include Capital Punishment (those dreaded upper case letters) and The 'F' Word (which, in Otto's case, stands for fear, failure, fool...). Working with artistic director Allen MacInnis and dramaturge Stephen Colella of the Lorraine Kimsa Theatre, Emil will be collaborating with composer Bryce Kulak.

Edward the Crazy ManMarie Day's book chronicles the friendship between a young boy named Charlie and Edward, a schizophrenic who fashions costumes out of cast-off items. Emil is working with director Leah Cherniak and producer Lisa Brown to adapt the book for a production to be staged by the Workman Arts, which is affiliated with the Centre for Mental Health and Addiction.

The Orphan's LoomA feature film about fate and identity, the Holocaust and contemporary Ireland, written with support from the Harold Greenberg Fund.

Mosquito MushA collection of poems about those pesky pests, and 'recipies' on how to get rid of them.
